This is so true, all his parts have singular personalities. I can't think of one role I have seen that is a generic type. He seems to hit on the humanity of each character, even the baddies. That's why some of the movies that are just so-so to me, I still watch over again, because of the characters he creates.
I like this quote too:
Nic's a rebel, he's anti-authority," says Turteltaub. "He was always looking to break rules and I was always looking to be king of the rules. I wanted more than anything to be popular and probably still today I have that need to be loved.
"If I was a psychologist, I would say Nic has it as well, but his defence when he doesn't get it, is to break away, say, 'It's not my thing' and find another path."

Ya know....if you truly 'listen' to what Turtletaub seems to be saying.......he's addressing how people who are afraid of being rejected for one reason or another often adopt such an attitude, an attitude that basically says "to hell with all of you"...... in an attempt to mask that they actual yearn to be welcomed and accepted into a certain group or lifestyle.
We all, to some extent, have that feeling deep down inside of us, ya know?
I know when I am rejected, I feel about as good as a piece of dirt and I can adopt an attitude of "You don't want me? Well, guess what? I don't want or need you either....SO THERE!".......

I like what you've said Lady Trueheart. For me this is what has made Nic the greatest actor, the way he utterly embodies a character. And I would add because it seems relevant... Sometimes his characters are maybe bigger than the films they are in, it's as if they can't contain him?
I think that has shifted perhaps in some of his later movies where it's as if he's tried to almost camouflage himself more within the fabric of the movie, in more contained performances. I'm thinking Bangkok Dangerous, Next, Knowing, the National Treasure Movies, Sorcerer's Apprentice. It seems he cannot please everyone though..some love the ones where he's hyper real and you can't take your eyes off him. Others can't stand it! (I love the variety!)
I agree with you both on how interesting it is to hear this incredibly open insight from Turteltaub. He has always struck me as such an honest and authentic man.
I guess this is only his perception of how Nic handles rejection, but he knows him and we don't!
Nic would have to have developed some kind of coping strategy in all honesty, because as he himself mentioned in a recent interview "the critics are all over me."
This links in to what I wrote in reply to one of Bonnie's pics about appreciation, it's good to know Nic follows his heart because at least he can feel secure in his own integrity and self worth whatever reaction there is externally!

Absolutely...and this is what gives those characters their edge. It's like a kinetic energy, there is often this tension created by that very dynamic of contained intensity. Even though it is more contained it is never a flat performance, there is the depth, but this time it's going on under the surface..sometimes bubbling like a volcano ready to erupt. Compelling!
