Good vs Evil and *Larger than Life* characters in Face/Off

Face/Off remains a unique and outstanding film to this day, and for some Nic Cage fans was the first introduction to his work. ( though we'd encourage you to delve very deeply into all his films that came prior!yellowflowergrin )

My first impression of this movie was how the tension between good and evil is cleverly and merged throughout the fabric of the film in both obvious and subtle ways, not least the switching of Faces and the blending of lives of the two main characters, somehow confusing the mind as to the motivational drives and morals of each.

This theme infuses nearly every scene... Some memorable ones including
~ when bad boy Castor Troy, after planting a bomb, irreverently dances in a priest outfit to a choir rendition of Hallelujah and then gropes/fondles ( can't work out which, but she doesn't seen to mind wink.gif) a choir girl;

~ A shoot out in a church at a funeral, juxtaposing white doves and guns;

~ The song *somewhere over the rainbow* playing in a little boys' headphones in the midst of a violent shoot out....

The movie also mixes an emotional intensity with high level action, making it a far more compelling journey than straight up action, and does so in such a way that you almost forget it is science fiction plot, which cleverly unfolds and exposes the psyches of each character and somehow turns a preposterous story into a believable and compelling character exploration. (Fascinating how after the switch each man exploits the power of the position of his opponent towards the same goal , destroying each other.)

And two roles for Nic in one movie where we get to see him play the bad and the good guy..? Where we have the whole multidimensional experience within two characters?! thumbsup.gif it's a joy to watch his diversity within the same film. film

In the light of Nic and John Travolta working together again, this part of John Travolta's 'Inside The Actor's Studio' interview, with a clip of Nic's Inside The Actor's Studio, is definitely worth watching! The part about their working together is about 1 minute in! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adJdaov2EII starry

This is a good example of how a great thread gets bypassed and forgotten. I remember this posting now, although not why I didn't respond at the time.  Glad you revisited it, Lula, especially given the recent flurry of speculation re Nic and John together again.

That is a great interview bite with John, he is interesting to listen to. Actually, I usually enjoy watching actors discuss their work, it is endlessly fascinating to me, the creative mind of the artist. I must say, I feel like revisiting Face/Off again, it has been about a year since I watched it last, and it is a real electric jolt each time I see it! What did Nic say when asked about his performance, and was it on the Actor's studio? I will have to watch him again to remember. At any rate I remember agreeing wholeheartedly.

GREAT find Lady Trueheart! highfivestarry
thank you for posting! Maybe it deserves a topic of it's own?

Nic seemed so nervous in this interview, and so handsome, I couldn't help but be a bit melty thud

I am so glad I had a chance to watch Nic's Inside The Actor's Studio several times before it was removed form youtube...which i have always found rather odd considering so many other actors interviews have not been removed. SAd that omeon would report it and spoil that for fans across teh world who didnt have a chance to see it!

How could I miss this awesome review?disbelief What a NICtastic read! starryWatched it a few times now, and it amazes me everytime, how Nic could play these two opposite characters so brilliantly! One of my absolute fave scenes is the one at the beginning, where he dances in his priest`s outfit, after planting the bomb at the convention center!
