Currently in theaters and enjoying the No. 3 slot on the box office chart, SEASON OF THE WITCH is a period horror film in the tradition of the fright fests of the ’70s. Set in the 14th century, the story tells of two Crusaders entrusted to transport a witch considered responsible for the Black Plague to a distant monastery for judgement. Along the way, all sorts of satanic road blocks make for an uneasy trip. Directed by DOMINIC SENA (WHITEOUT) from a script by BRAGI F. SCHUT (THRESHOLD), the film stars NICOLAS CAGE, RON PERLMAN and CLAIRE FOY. While it’s easy to suggest CAGE took this as a “paycheck” role, it should be remembered that he’s an avid fan of all things supernatural and has taken on several genre movies over the years. During the recent London press conference for the film, CAGE talked about his reason for taking on SEASON OF THE WITCH. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)
Yes refreshingly positive! What I am feeling is that somehow people perceive science fiction or fantasy or abstract films (or other artforms for that matter) as less worthy, less 'arty', less actorly....less valid somehow...hence the accusations that get levelled at Nics' choices. I say that's BS ...as you may know I studied science fiction or my degree.. it's the most liberating artform for raising awareness, for exploring so called reality, for exploring the deeper dimensions of ourselves..and it is limitless...in that sense it is the highest art with the highest potential. and it is fun! I like difference ...and I personally feel Nic as an actor does keep bringing new things, why should he be penalised for not remaining CAGED in the expectations of others? by the way, that is not the same as saying that a person can or can't decide for themselves if they like a film or not...but sometimes i don't think that is what happens for people or critics! At the moment it actually feels like a Nicolas Cage witch hunt!
so. yeah...i like this article. sorry for that little rant...... and breathe.
The only positive thing to see in it is that he always gets a reaction, what he does gets noticed. I saw one really review that said it was time for him to do television! No problem with television, lots of fine actors there, but give me a break!
