@powermad i agree, the movie does an awful lot to make us lose this fundamental truth as we watch it..ultimately it is a  tragic tale about loneliness and a yearning for love

I love that he ends up with a lank of wood as his only companion and even that is turned against him!

but this i why i love this movie, it could have been told so differently, with the realism, but instead we get layers, not only in terms of not knowing what is real or imaginary, but in terms  of nic's acting...amazing performance from a then very young actor!

He mentioned, that this movie was like a lab for him, where he could experiment with all kinds of expressions, like those kind from the german silent movie aera.
