How ‘spirit of vengeance’ consumed Nicolas Cage

I think that the Sun is not so reputable? And I think some of this is possibly lifted from other interviews, but I must say it is pretty darn interesting!

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/features/4120570/How-spirit-of-vengeance-consumed-Nicholas-Cage.html

ANYONE who suggests that Hollywood doesn't have any hellraisers left has clearly forgotten about Nicolas Cage.

The Oscar-winning actor has a certain madness in his method acting.

So much so that he turned up to a Christmas party in a voodoo mask believing he really was comic book character Ghost Rider.

And he admits things got so out of hand that he was lucky not to be thrown in jail.

In an exclusive — and slightly odd — interview, Cage talks of actors being like Shamans and using "Enochian angel" language.

In Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance 3D, the 48-year-old returns as motorcycle stuntman Johnny Blaze, who has been given super powers by the devil.

Out on February 17, the film is the sequel to 2007's Ghost Rider, a £144million box office hit.

It also stars home-grown talents Idris Elba as a bike-riding alcoholic monk, newcomer Fergus Riordan and Ciaran Hinds in the main supporting roles.

Filming entailed time in both Romania and Turkey for American Cage, who spends a lot of time in Britain at his home near Glastonbury, which reportedly straddles a mystical ley line.

While many might pick Somerset because of its beautiful countryside, the actor revealed his reasoning was not so straightforward.

He said: "I came here largely because of my interest in British history and mythology.

"Because even though I'm far from home in your beautiful country, I can't help but feel some connection to the land — because of my appreciation for it.

"And also because of the way England happened, with different elements coming into the area and forming the language, the Romans and the Saxons and all of it."

He has an even more "out there" way of picking his roles.

Nicolas — whose six-year-old son Kal-El was called after Superman's Kryptonian name — was attracted to the Ghost Rider role due to his love of the comic book on which it is based. But also, as Nic reveals: "I really believed I was this character."

The star, who has in the past described his acting style as "Nouveau Shamanic" would wear a voodoo mask both on and off set so as to get in touch with the "supernatural".

Referring to Shamans — messengers between the human and spirit worlds who often wear masks — the star offered this rather bamboozling explanation.

He said: "There was a writer named Brian Bates who put forward the notion that all actors, whether they know it or not, come from a long distant past of medicine men and Shamans.

"This Shaman would go into an altered state of consciousness to try to find answers and solutions to give to the village people that were there. It was a way of channelling the imagination to talk with spirits to give answers to the village. So they would wear masks or gather objects that had some magical relevance. So I thought, 'Well, because I'm dealing with this supernatural character, why don't I try a little of that and see what happens?'

"So I would paint my face with black and white make-up so it looked like a skull — like some sort of Afro-Caribbean voodoo icon or a New Orleanian voodoo icon. And put black contact lenses in my eyes to look more like a skull — you couldn't see any white in the eyes.

"And I'd sew ancient Egyptian artefacts into my costume, get some rocks that had alleged frequencies too.

"Who knows if it works or not? The point is it stimulated my imagination to think I really was this character.

"And that led me to believe maybe I really was this spirit of vengeance."

Unsurprisingly, when Nicolas walked on set with his voodoo skull face, his co-stars looked horrified. But that was nothing compared to the guests at the Christmas party near where they had been shooting in Romania. He turned up still believing he was the terrifying Ghost Rider character.

Nicolas smiled as he explained: "If you have a Christmas party in Romania and you're shooting until 2am and you're invited to go the Christmas party and some schnapps is involved and you're still in character, all hell can break loose. And it did. I'm lucky I'm not in a Romanian prison."

Getting into the role went even further than that for Nicolas — star of hits such as Con Air, Raising Arizona, Gone In Sixty Seconds and Kick-Ass. He adopted a "hypnotic rhythmic motion" for Ghost Rider's walk, inspired by two cobras he used to keep at home.

And referring to Enochian — a language English alchemist Dr John Dee claims to have heard angels speak in the 16th Century — he added: "Sometimes I would start talking in what I thought was like a Wotanic Norse dialogue or some sort of Enochian angelspeak or something."

Nicolas loves doing his own stunts — even though he hasn't always got off scot-free.

"I had two concussions in six months, working stunts on two movies," he revealed, not naming the films. "Thankfully I'm OK but one of them was ridiculous and should never have happened.

"The actor was really in his moment and grabbed my head and smashed it on the marble floor. I couldn't speak right for a couple of days."

In fact, Nicolas reckons living dangerously actually relaxes him. "The odd thing with me, as you might notice with all the caffeine here on the table, is that it calms me down.

"If someone puts a bit of fire on me or asks me to drive extremely fast in a car chase, everything slows down and it gets my mind off everything else. The emotional, whatever baggage may be happening — it all goes away and I relax."

So his third wife Alice Kim, 28 — who he wed in July 2004 — didn't tell him to slow down on the Ghost Rider motorbike?

Nicolas said: "She loved it. She thought it looked great, she thought it was a very sexy motorcycle and wanted to have a ride on it."

Sounds like the perfect Mrs Cage.

Not a fan of The Sun but the interview is good! The more I hear Nic talk about his Nouveau Shamanic experience, the more I l look forward to GR!And I guess this is the first time Nic speaks about using Enochian angelspeak...Wow!         It is upsetting he got so heavily injured while filming though, the job is very dangerous sometimes. Please be careful Sir Nic!!!hug

The Sun along with the rest of the uk tabloids are known for spinning their gossipy yarns, but this was a great read, and possibly not as hyperbolic as it could have been!

Loved reading about the enochian angelspeak, but perhaps after watching the Letterman interview where Nicolas claims to be "95% sceptic" I won't read such things in the same way!

Yeah..the concussion bit is hard to read...especially how it happened!

NICe to hear Nic talking about how Alice found the bike sexy, flowerface  she has impeccible taste in menand bikes! starry

'He adopted a "hypnotic rhythmic motion" for Ghost Rider's walk, inspired by two cobras he used to keep at home.'

I can see the cobra-type movements, for sure.

I hope we get to hear Nic speak in his language as Ghost Rider, it would be very cool!
