A fascinating read from io9, not sure I agree with all of it, or that it 'gets' Nic as an actor...and still harkens to the school of thought that acting should be 'actorly' or else it is odd/ weird/psychotic, but nevertheless an infectious, affectionately  passionate piece!

As critical as the writer of the piece may sound, strangely, I get it.

I think, he's not writing from the perspective of a Nic Cage fanatic like we are here, but from an approach of an everyday moviegoer, going to the cinema to enhale a movie, for sh*ts or giggles, an adrenaline rush, and/or strickly for entertainment.  And this is what many moviegoers come out thinking...

I often too, come out thinking the same way... Thinking, gosh, the script was not so great but Nic made the movie relevant and watchable, and better yet, entertaining.  Due to his Nouveau Shamanic way of thinking (thanks to Miles Davis), and/or acting, we get a glimpse into Nic's criptic mind thru his character.

I think the key is, especially nowadays with Nic, you have to be willing to take that journey with him to fully appreciate his offerings.  Because, as the writer points out, when you take that journey with him, he is always willing to give you a singular, atypical, and distinctive prospect of the character or the movie itself.

Just read the article, and I, too, don`t know, if I would agree with all of them, but, the Nic quotes about his acting style and his performances are great and also the vids from some of his best movies are really interesting! Thank you, Lula, for posting it!

Interesting to read your thoughtful post Gina! do you think that the writer is objective and writing from an equal playing field? I think there is a critical bandwagon perspective which is more biased than the perspectie of a 'Nic Cage fanatic', with an ideology that reinforces itself by reiterating various myths. as you say when they finally take the journey they discover it for themselves, so the Nic Cage fanatics vision was not so rose tinted after all.

Lula, I think that's it!!  You've nailed it! I agree, there is certainly that element of bandwagon fanatics out there, moreso than us being a Nic Cage fanatic!!! rolllaughrolllaugh And to some degree, the writer may be relishing some of that 'bandwagon fanatic' behavior in his piece but overall, I think he gets it.

America has become so jaded though and quick to judge and set in their ways which is why I believe Ghost Rider isn't doing as well here.  However, abroad, is a totally different story!  Over $44 million and still growing because folks are willing to take that journey and explore new and dynamic surfaces of Nic's characters and how he relays them to his audience.

I think if more writers are willing to broaden their own horizons, I think they'd see what we see here - an extremely charismatic, multi-faceted thespian that gives us his all in every performance.  Now that's saying something!!!

This is all I can say to the author of that blog:

"Appreciation is might be difficult in your part because of your "professionalism". But judging one's work without even thinking if you're just after your ego or what your eyes is conceiving, well then, you don't deserve the spot where you are right now! I'm very disappointed of the way you treating Nicolas. Remember! You can catch your reader's attention by not doing some sh*t articles. And this is one of the reasons why I totally hate media people. You're just after your money not your dignity. Oh well, I can't please you! Do whatever you want!"

T/N: Sorry ranting much! Some of the words written there was totally nonsense. I hate that writer!!

feeling the passion there Reggie!

yes it seems there is a trend in backhanded compliments in articles like these, i am beginning wonder what came over me when i posted this, maybe to stimulate discussions such as these! flowerface it is even technically inaccurate in some places, like The Sorcerer's Apprentice being a 'Disney failure' when it actually made $215.3 million worldwide.

I do like this about Bringing Out The Dead though:

Bringing Out the Dead (1999)
I love this film. Martin Scorsese directs Cage as a paramedic who's burning out — and seeing the ghosts of the people he couldn't save. Cage gives a low-energy, broody, grim performance as a guy who's on the edge of falling apart. Here, he saves a guy who's impaled himself on a balcony railing.
