Pretty cool interview with Ethan Hawke, and below is what he had to say about Nic! Great to read, and of course, they were so good together in Lord Of War. An awesome movie.
"I'm kind of obsessed with Nic Cage. I just found out about /r/onetruegod too. He's the only actor since Marlon Brando that's actually done anything new with the art of acting; he's successfully taken us away from an obsession with naturalism into a kind of presentation style of acting that I imagine was popular with the old troubadours. If I could erase his bottom half bad movies, and only keep his top half movies, he would blow everyone else out of the water. He's put a little too much water in his beer, but he is still one of the great actors of our time. And working with him was an absolute pleasure. In fact, one of my favorite scenes I've ever done is the last scene in LORD OF WAR."
I've always liked Ethan Hawke. I always thought he was a pretty nice guy as well as being a great actor. Looking forward to seeing The Purge the premise alone creeped me out, and that never usually happens. Although, I do agree with what he says especially with the 'water in beer' remark.

I appreciate Ethan's comments but, if you're going to give a compliment why dilute it with suspect innuendos like: If I could erase his bottom half bad movies, and only keep his top half movies... He's put a little too much water in his beer..."
I get it's free speech though, I've always felt that when another actor suggests borderline negative comments against another thespian, it just wreaks of jealousy.

I don't like that either, Gina, and I was just thinking that I don't believe I have ever heard Nic say anything disparaging of another actor either. Too bad they can't all be as considerate and thoughtful as Nic is. I don't even know what that water in his beer comment means!

it means he has diluted what was originally really good into something that is new but not good and something that 'tastes' bad which no one is really happy with, which means he has done too much. I know it isnt nice. And you're right, Nic is nice and sees niceness in everyone. Sean Penn made a comment when 'Cage went from personal drama 'Leaving Las Vegas' to going to generic action and becomming more of a performer'
