Altho I highly value my imagination, and it has given me much pleasure and comfort, if I had to choose between the two for the rest of my life, I would definitely choose sensation. Interesting to use my imagination to contemplate what my life would be like with only sensation and no imagination!!
This is kind of the same question as "sensation or imagination, to me: Fire or Air?/> -- Edited by Lady Grace on Monday 25th of July 2011 07:21:56 PM

Really making me think on that one. Giving up sensation is giving up life. Imagination brings a lot of sensations, or enhances our enjoyment of them. Our minds also both cause and protect us from a lot of pain in life, as well as giving us pleasure. But without sensation can we really experience life? As sensation is experienced in the mind, it is a thin line between the two.
It's hard to imagine a life without imagination!

Sensation or imagination?

Both -- like crunchy peanut butter, or chewy brownies with crunchy chocolate chips in them, or?
Lula, I see your point that they are the same thing because they both originate in the mind - kind of what I was saying also. But I would choose imagination over sensation related to input of the body. (Granting that we can produce many bodily sensations thru our thoughts/imagination.) Because from the imagination comes the concept of God, which I am very fond of, and also the concepts of love, loyalty, chivalry, responsibility, beauty, etc. Some things - like love and beauty - we seem to have a physical reaction that comes even before our thoughts about it, which is a conundrum to ponder... but still then our experience of such things is largely influenced by our thoughts that come after. We are indeed thinking creatures/creations. There is no sensation without our minds to perceive it, but how many other wonders our minds can create! Thus, I would have to choose the mind, the imagination, as all is perceived by/created from there. The mind is limitless, can create almost any sensation just by thinking of it, is (ideally) safe and wholly under our control and at our command as to how we use them and what we experience thru them. We have total freedom there. If we be paralized or imprisoned or wracked with (physical or emotional) pain or bored, our mind can take us to some other reality, give us comfort/relief/pleasure. I guess that's why they call it meta-physics. I wonder what the difference is between the mind and the imagination? Is there a difference? I'll have to look that up.
Hedonist! Why does that have such a bad connotation? I think we are supposed to enjoy this miraculous creation! I went thru a monk phase, but even then I enjoyed all the little pleasures like birds singing and flowers and cool breezes and... So I guess I was a hedonist ascetic. ( :

Our imaginations are also necessary to solve problems and create, design, build. Actually, humans wouldn't have started living in caves if they hadn't imagined it would provide shelter! Or learned to create fire for warmth and light. Etc.
