White Fay, I am glad you agree w/ me about Nic losing his mainstream appeal somewhat by choosing certain roles and not allowing directors and the screenplay to bring the best out in Nic. That is what I was trying to convey in my other threads, but it came off confusing. I love Nic's work and certain films he chooses, but I also will say that a great amount of my favorite films are not Nicolas Cage movies. I actually love the horror/ sci fi a lot, but they have to be convincing. The Director in a film and the screenplay are key to film and no matter how great the actor, sometimes even they can't make a film great. Sighting directors that brought out the best in Nic: Cohen Bros, Spike Jones, Lynch and Werner Herzog. I don't count Figgis from LLV or Robert Bierman from Vampire's Kiss because that was all Nic. I know Nic believes in his work and the people he is working w/ but I will rejoice when Nic doesn't have his financial situation in the back of his mind. I would love to see smaller more intimate films and some supporting roles too because that could also prove that Nic doesn't NEED to be the main focus. I know most of you are Nic superfans.......so am I, but I want Nic's films to move me again and make me think more than they have lately. Nicolas deserves better and so do we as fans. I want to be moved in a passionate way and I want Nicolas to get the Fire and Brimstone back!
Don't get me wrong. Personally, I love all of Nic's projects. His choice in movies is eclectic to say the least and they always entertain. I just think he really lives his life to his own drummer and I would guess that in the world of movie making, it is often wise to play the 'game' in order to stay in the 'game'. I'd also love to see Nic get the true recognition he deserves but in order to do that he needs for the masses to see his strengths and that means pulling out all the stops and playing against his own 'type' in order to impress the masses and stay in the market. Just my thoughts of course.

How does anyone know what Nic has in the back of his mind when he chooses roles? Only he does; as is true of us all as we go about our business and daily lives. And I find him to be very open and forthcoming in his interviews about his acting motivations.
I don't believe that his financial affairs need to be constantly referred to on a public forum, do any of us want people talking about our bank balance? I don't. Not all of his latest movies have had huge salaries, he does small films, big films, as he always has. That has not changed.
And, he always did lots of movies. He loves to work, he is an artist. He picks and chooses by his own standards. He has said so in his interviews. Nic is a mega star, the focus of any movie he is in will always be on him, that is not going to change, nor should he have to prove anything to us. Real artists don't create according to the whims of their fans. They are artists because they need to be.
I continue to be moved by Nic's latest movies, In Knowing, Bad Lieutenant, Kick-Ass, Sorcerer's Apprentice and Season of The Witch he gave wonderful performances for me to enjoy, be moved by, feel passionate about and to think about.
What a pity you did not see them that way.
You said: Nicolas deserves better and so do we as fans. What does that mean, and by whose standards, and who decides who is deserving or not anyway? As a fan, I find in his movies a mulitude of gifts and I look forward to many more to come.
I agree with you lady true especially about the finances part thats nics private things and think they need to be kept that way.I have had people contact me asking for cash has a nic fan and i was appauled , i did put the posts on the last forum if anyone saw it. it makes me mad people can be insensitive , how would you feel in that situation ?? I bet you would not like everyone discussing you i know i wouldnt anyway - i wont say any more has it makes me mad . (sorry)
I will watch anything nic is in has a fan he seems to choose roles he feels happy in so i am happy to watch him and i hope he produces lots more amazing films as i dont think out of every nic film i have ,and think i have them all there is not one i can say is bad in any way.
I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers discussing Nic's personal life and wasn't aware that it bothered so many posters. All I am saying is that being in a financial bind, limits Nic's ability to be able to choose a role instead of taking anything that comes his way. I believe it affects the quality of film choices Nic has because he doesn't have the clout anymore to turn down roles: like Trespass, but he came back to it even though he didn't have the power to pick the part he wanted (the bad guy). I am sorry if my views of Nic bother some of you. Nic is my favorite actor, but I know he can show even more range by doing supporting roles and playing characters that people wouldn't expect. I was watching Inside the Actors Studio w/ Downey JR. and w/ Matt Damon and they are on par w/ Nic's greatness too. I don't think Nic has ever done the show Inside the Actors Studio, but it really gives an inside view of the actors lives. I know Nic doesn't give interviews that much and is very private, but I would find it interesting to hear his views on acting and people he has worked w/. Colin Firth is on tonight on Bravo on the show. Also, I would love to see Nic push his body/ mind like Damon did for Courage Under Fire or Bale has done for The Machinest & The Fighter. I think artists should listen to fans sometimes in reguards to their work. Musicians listen to their fans all the time w/ albums that have rare songs or never released tracks. I love Nic like the rest of you, but I want the best from him and people working on film is all. SOTW seemed unfinished to me........the firt 5 minutes seems spliced together. I know Nic is capable of greater work than that and I hope some agree on here.
When I began this forum I made a conscious decision that Nic's personal and private life was not going to be up for public cinsumption analysis and dissection here...call me strange but that kind of gossip doesn't come naturally to me as a fan or a person and i feel it is a human right to have a level of privacy. Apart from the fact that we can't and have no right to know about Nicolas Cage's personal life, we don't need to reinforce the celebrity culture of casually dragging another human being's stuff through the mud..it is aassumptive, disrespectful and unnecessary...Nic has a wide ranging and impressive library of work, for me that is enough to enjoy and discuss and that is where my focus is as a fan!
you are as entitled to your opnion as much as any of us, but you are presenting your individual point of view as if it were an absloute truth.. assuming for example that certiain movies are of a lesser quality, when in fact that is more about your taste, so I cannot concur with that because that simply is not how I experience those movies. nor your view on the actors he works with. nor your assumptions about what motivates Nics' choices or that he doesn't make any and accepts all (a contradiction right there i believe)! in fact i strongly disagree.
For me you are reinventing the same Nicolas Cage myths that are repeatedly circulated.... and to be honest do find a little less than respectful towards Nicolas Cage. We are all discerning intelligent people capable of making or own minds up, and simply do not agree with much of what you say. there are no ruffled feathers on my part, i just don't agree! perhaps it should be less about you seeking out agreement from others, but taking on board there are different points of view than yours?!
oh and, when a new poster on any forum repeatedy uses phrases like " i don't want to offend anyone" and "ruffle anyones feathers" and " i hope some posters agree" "i hope i am not going to get flamed by anyone on here" the little alarm bell goes off in the head...i have seen it too many times before. all the best clcdmb.
I am not attempting to create arguments in this forum by any means. I have been coming onto the CageFactor boards and now this forum for years and Nic is the only actor I pull up onto IMDB. It is funny when a fan like me who wants Nic to make more films like Adaptation and Vampire's Kiss over the likes of SOTW or Bangkok dangerous, I get flack and accused of being a "troll." I used to go on the DallasCowboys forum and tried to sight where the team could improve, but got railroaded because I wasn't wearing rose colored glasses. I am a realist and know Nic is capable of TOP NOTCH films. I enjoy film more than any forum except music, but when my favorite band puts out a subpar album, I know they are capable of better. Sometimes artists get too comfortable in their status and become lazy in their work and that goes for most artists. I know it is only my opinon, but obsessed fans can't be that blind to see an artists great work and not so great. I am looking forward to Drive Angry and Hungry Rabbit and Trespass. I hope Nicolas gets these revenge thrillers out of his system and can go back to drama and comedy. I has been a long time since a great slapstick comedy he has been apart of. I respect all of you on here and am glad I can go to a forum about Nic because most of my friends roll their eyes when I mention Nicolas now. I don't like the fact the critics say he is "the worst" actor or sunk to a new low. You can't call an Oscar winner overrated or a bad actor. Just odd choices. Hope I can chat w/ you all later today. Also, what timezone is this forum run out of? I live in CA, so my time is different here.
