So we know that Nic chose Cage as his last name as a homage of sorts to Luke Cage the comic book character and avante Guarde composer/ musician, John Cage. But did we know that Milton was his middle name?
Thought it was worth mentioning, seems like there may be more to the naming of Milton in Drive Angry than the obvious connection with John Milton's epic poem 'Paradise Lost':
Anyway.....is anyone familiar with John Cage's work? It is really an utterly fascinating experienc and approach...many compositions post 1951 were apparently based on patterns generated by the I Ching. and star charts
I'm a big John Cage fan, absolutely. There is something about his music that is so impressive, inspiring, and thought provoking even though there are no lyrics in it...He undoubtedly was a pioneer of chance and avant-garde music which I'm also a fan of
Hi Voodoo child! Thanks for your comment and for posting more John Milton. I am vet to explore his work in it's entirety and it does evolve across his career.
It definitely would make sense wouldn't it about Nic choosing the name, (although i do think the John Milton Paradise Lost was probably a more overt connection?) and I don't believe in coincidence.. so whether Milton was consciously or unconsciously chosen..so cool isn't it?
When I first heard about John Cage's music I was immediately compelled to find out more because the concept of what he has done is truly pioneering and art in a highest form (in my opinion). But when I first listened to it, it took me a while to engage with it on anything other than the same cerebral level..which was surprising to me, because with something like abstract art i am immediately submerged in the emotional response which transcends the logical thinking mind...because it is so free and unstructured...whereas with his music at first i experienced the opposite!
I'm fascinated by the whole chance thing........... In my truth nothing is chance. And even things like chaos have an underlying pattern that emerges. And i guess that is what his music comes to symbolize for me.
Nic seems to be very well read so the naming of his character after the John Milton of "Paradise Lost" seems an obvious choice when talking about "DRIVE ANGRY" but when you put together the first AND middle names of John Milton Cage, the composer....well......then.......it seems.....that Nic very well might have been playing at a round a bout double entendre. Fascinating, really.
