Nicolas Cage, John Cusack In 'The Frozen Ground'!!!!

I just came across this brief piece mentioning the director of Frozen Ground. Apparenty it is his directorial debut!

"WME has signed Scott Walker, who took time from prepping his next film,The Frozen Ground, to meet with the major agencies last week. Walker is making his directorial debut on his scripted drama about the hunt for Alaska’s most notorious serial predator, Robert Hansen. John Cusack is playing Hansen, regarded in the community as a respected family man but who, in the span of 12 years, abducted more than 24 women, flew them into the Alaskan wilderness and hunted and murdered them. Vanessa Hudgens plays the lone victim who escapes and Nicholas Cage plays the Alaskan State Trooper who finds her on the street. Together they work to bring Hansen to justice. The film begins production in Alaska on October 17, financed by Emmett/Furla Films."

Thanks for the addtional info Lula!  I certainly read somewhere that this would be the director's directorial debut.  Not quite sure how I feel about that though.  I think movies moving forward are critical for Nic and directors should truly have a handle on how to handle mega-stars such as Nic.

I was just thinking back to that article where Nic and Jon Lovitz spoke about their horrid experiences with a new director on the set of Trapped in Paradise.  With a director whom had only one movie (in terms of directing) under his belt before he directed "Trapped in Paradise".

Though Nic is a pro and I think he's mentioned that he looks forward too working with new directors?

Hard to say Gina, I think it depends on the person and their approach rather than their experience, maybe the fresh energy of a new director could be a very creative thing! I have  in so many interviews and seen so much behind the scenes stuff on how easy an experience it is for directors and co-stars to work with Nic, and how collaborative the process is! actiondirector

I think Scott Walker also wrote the screenplay? That has to be cool, to see the project through from conception! Great cast too...really looking forward to this project! starry

I too agree with everyone here about Nick's role of being the good guy. I think John Cusack will do good as he's a good actor too. Although, I've seen him only in parts like Con Air was. I never seen him as an serial killer but I don't like Nick playing that role at all. True he can do it but I prefer his roles he's done in the past type.

More Frozen Ground filming news from Anchorage! action

I wonder why Nic would want to have  real gun rather than a prop?

http://community.adn.com/adn/node/158387

Three actors playing Alaska State Troopers waited Wednesday in an East Anchorage backyard as a tall man sifted through several cases of handguns.

"I'm a Realtor, actually," said a trooper in a vintage trench coat as Jason Hammond, the film's property master, prepared to hand the men their Smith & Wesson revolvers.

The weapons are fakes, the props supervisor said. All except one. "Nicolas Cage will carry a real gun, as per his request," Hammond said.

Welcome to day three of filming on "The Frozen Ground," a thriller based on the arrest of Alaska serial killer Robert Hansen. The movie spans three weeks in the investigation leading to Hansen's capture as icy fall turns to early winter in 1980s Anchorage.

With no snow yet in the city, the frozen ground in "The Frozen Ground" was played Wednesday by drifts of salt on top of white fabric surrounding a Muldoon home, not far from where the real Hansen lived.

Hansen himself is played by John Cusack, while Cage portrays a state trooper on his tail. Both actors appeared in scenes filmed Wednesday: Cage's character on stakeout in a Cadillac Brougham across the street from the Hansen house. Cusack peeking through the curtains at the suspicious car.

"Basically, any scene that shoots in or around this house, no matter where it is in the script, is being shot today because we're not going to come back here twice," said producer Mark Ordesky.

Just out of frame, trucks full of film equipment lined the street in what is becoming a common sight in Anchorage following the 2010 production of the Drew Barrymore film "Big Miracle." The family-friendly whale rescue tale, also inspired by true events, was the first modern, major movie filmed entirely in Alaska.

"Frozen Ground" is shaping up to be a smaller-scale, faster-paced production.

A producer told the Daily News earlier this year that "Whales," opening in February, would cost in the mid-$30 million range. "Frozen Ground" producer Randall Emmett said his film will cost in the mid-$20 million range.

Emmett, like every film producer to consider making movies in the state, is an evangelist for the 3-year-old Alaska tax credit program that allow filmmakers to recoup up to 44 percent of their spending. The public subsidy is among the most generous in the country.

"When a state gets an incentive at this level, like Alaska has, people now are going to really look to come here," said Emmett, who has served as a producer on more than 60 movies -- released or now in production -- since 2000.

Some of those films feature Emmett's business partner, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, who will soon begin filming the part of a pimp in "Frozen Ground."

Emmett said he was the most prolific producer in Michigan before that state gutted its tax incentives, and said he'd be interested in investing in movie-making infrastructure, such as a studio, in Alaska if the state commits long-term to incentives.

While the "Big Miracle" shoot spanned about 60 days and more 20 locations, according to permits the filmmakers filed with the city, "Frozen Ground" will be filmed in 26 days, said unit production manager Tracey Landon.

About 40 Alaskans are working on the movie crew, Landon said. That's about half the total. The cast of 50 includes another 30 Alaskans, while roughly 725 more will appear as extras, she said.

In the backyard of the house, the three movie state troopers were issued their weapons.

"So which one of us gets to tackle Cusack?" the real estate man asked. None of you, the props supervisor replied.

"Obviously, guys, there's no reason to pull these out of their holsters, so please don't," Hammond said.

The men were shown how to attach holsters to their belts. One, Ryan Rockom, ought to know. An Anchorage police officer, his 7-year-old boy plays Hansen's son in the movie and filmmakers offered him a small part of his own.

Rockom worked the night shift the evening before filming and was scheduled to be back on duty Wednesday night.

Interesting piece from the Location Guide on Alaska filming incentives!

http://www.thelocationguide.com/blog/2011/10/alaskan-filming-incentives-attract-nic-cage-and-john-cusack-feature-the-frozen-ground/

Alaskan filming incentives attract Nic Cage and John Cusack feature The Frozen Ground

Alaska’s generous incentive scheme hasn’t attracted any big-budget studio productions, but featureThe Frozen Groundis currently in East Anchorage. Starring Nicolas Cage and John Cusack, it’s probably the state’s biggest shoot sinceBig Miracle(formerlyEverybody Loves Whales).

Budgeted at around USD25 million, according to the Anchorage Daily News,The Frozen Groundis based on the true story of Alaskan serial killer Robert Hansen, who was active in the early 1980s. John Cusack is playing Hansen, with Nic Cage as an Alaskan State Trooper.

When a state gets an incentive at this level, like Alaska has, people now are going to really look to come here.

Randall Emmett, Producer

Producer Randall Emmett told the outlet he would be interested in setting up a more permanent base inAlaskasince the incentives restructuring in Michigan: “When a state gets an incentive at this level, like Alaska has, people now are going to really look to come here.”

The state offers filming incentives worth up to 44%, but is struggling to attract major productions. Last month it was confirmed that Zack Snyder’s new Superman film would double part of British Columbia’sVancouver Islandfor Alaska rather than travel further north.

It is great to see the location and how the sets are created, and there seems to be real openness and buzz there! And did we get a glimpse of Nic shooting too? action

It does seem a short while Lady True, but it only takes a while to create a masterpiece....and the intensity of that must have it's advantages...don't forget Leaving Las Vegas was shot in only 28 days! director

What an amazing opportunity - to film in so many different countries and meet the locals there. I wonder if Nic will visit the museums like he usually does.

UPDATE 11/9/11

Seems a storm is brewing in Alaska.  Hope Nic and the crew are okay...

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - An "epic" storm was bearing down on western Alaska on Tuesday, the National Weather Service said, warning that it could be one of the worst on record for the state.

The storm, moving inland from the Aleutian Islands, was expected to bring hurricane-force winds with gusts up to 100 miles per hour, heavy snowfall, widespread coastal flooding and severe erosion to most of Alaska's west coast, the National Weather Service said.

"This will be an extremely dangerous and life threatening storm of an epic magnitude rarely experienced," the service said in a special warning message.

Nome and the rest of the Seward Peninsula, a section of land that juts out toward Siberia, were expected to be the hardest-hit areas, said Andy Brown, lead forecaster for the National Weather Service in Anchorage.

Powerful storms in the North Pacific and Bering Sea are common this time of year, but this event is unusual because of its trajectory, Brown said.

"It's going very far north," he said.

Officials in Nome issued an evacuation order late on Tuesday for people living along Front Street, a beachside avenue that serves as the finish line for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, and for other low-lying areas in town.

At least three other communities were housing residents in local shelters as of Tuesday afternoon, said Bryan Fisher, chief of operations for the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

But long-distance evacuations from the remote region were not considered feasible, Fisher told a media briefing in Anchorage.

NATIVE VILLAGES IN HARM'S WAY

"Air traffic will not be flying in the weather that we're expecting in the next 24 to 48 hours," he said.

Posing an additional threat is the lack of sea ice off northwestern Alaska, forecasters said.

The last time a storm of a similar magnitude was sent in the same northward direction was 1974, but the sea surface was much more frozen then, Brown said.

"History tells that the sea ice helps subdue the storm surge," Brown said. "With no sea ice there, we could see the full brunt of that 6- to 9-foot storm surge."

Arctic sea ice this year reached the second-lowest coverage since satellite records began in 1979, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado.

"Forty years ago, a big storm like this would come through and the sea ice would act as sort of a buffer," said Mark Serreze, director of the Snow and Ice Data Center.

"The Bering Sea has and always will have these strong storms. What is different now is their potential destructiveness as you lose the sea ice cover," he added.

Federal, state and local agencies were making emergency preparations in advance of the storm. The state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management set up an incident command, with numerous agencies coordinating responses.

The U.S. Coast Guard said it has staged helicopters in the region and sent a cutter to prepare for emergency responses, with a special focus on the crab-fishing fleet.

Numerous government agencies have set up an incident command, said Jeremy Zidek, a spokesman for the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Nome, with 3,600 residents, is one of the largest cities in western Alaska. The communities spread along the coastline are mostly traditional Native settlements, with a few hundred to a few thousand inhabitants, and no roads linking communities.

Although the region is sparsely populated, the storm presents significant dangers, Alaska Senator Mark Begich said in a written statement.

"I realize we are in a remote part of the country, but many people and communities are in harm's way," Begich said.

Most of the actors are new names to me, except Nic and Cusack of course. It is always interesing to see where their careers go after they get a part with A-list actors. Looks like Amber Heard is doing really well, for instance.

Halcombe is new to me too, Lula. I also read somewhere that his role is a composite of the different troopers who played a role in Hansen's capture.
