It's very quiet direction - simple, gracful camera moves. I imagine much of the direction was in the instructions given to the actors.

it is such a tender moment eva, mirroring the opera!

Sprocket the dvd audio commenary is insightful on the shooting of the opera scene, apparetly just the2  actors and Norman Jewison the director, cher cried real tears and so did Norman!

Yes, indeed, eva. The gentleness, when he touches her hand and tries to kiss it, is absolutly wonderful! And, when Loretta begins to open herself to the music, and cries, is such a wonderful scene, too.
