So that scene lets us know that Jack is a charmer but not really a steadfast kind of guy. One can imagine the unseen parts, he gets all caught up in the fastpaced world he has entered, and she is waiting and getting worried at home, then he decides he is not ready for a settled down life yet. Which, when you are as young as they were, is not so unusual.

Maybe a glimpse of it, at the airport. But, then "13 years later", there is the "player" and "wiz-kid", that loves money, women and good music.

With his choice to go to London, and to leave her, he shows a total different Jack, then later in the glimpse. But, I think, deep inside, he is still the Jack from years ago, before he left her.

Lady T, how interesting, i dont feel they are two separate men, rather elements of each in the other magnified. my perception of Jack in the opening scene is slightly different,  i see 2 people who have career paths and both equal in that, and someone who is committed and loving, that their decision is mutual and he has every intention to commit to their relationship long term.. but that something happened to him to bring about a change in that from him he was away..Kate had a gut feeling but it felt spontaneous...

He certaimly seems like a very charismatic and charming man, in the opening credits scene and till he enters his new life. Totally into his job andthe rush of it, but not necessarilly a bad man.

it was a bit of a shock when we leap 13 years forward, while sitting in bed Jack lowers his paper, we see the naked back of a woman with blonde hair, who turns around.... and it is not Kate! i was thinking, 'what happened?'

but he is oh so charming and gorgeous in that scene, in a one night stand play boy kind of a way..but even then there is a tinge of the loneliness we see in Jack later on when he asks to see her again but she is going to see her family for Christmas....

It might have been interesting to see some of Kate's other life.

Well, we are all self-oriented from birth, I believe, and our life experiences make us what we become to a certain extent, so I can believe that someone's life could go in such diverse directions, depending on the path they follow.

One of my fav scenes in there, is the one, that follows after that. When he opens his closet, singing "La donna e mobile" in his typical NIColicious Style! This is such a great scene! :)
