I think Nicolas and the director should at least get a nomination but I think they released Joe at the wrong time of the year. Usually independent movies get released just in time for the oscar race and Joe was released way to early and that could be the problem that it will be forgotten at awards season which is a shame. I know that Nicolas doesn't care about awards but I would to see him be nominated and appreciated again in the acting world. It breaks my heart when I read all these positive reviews about Joe by these critics that say Oh, look Nicolas Cage can act again. Nicolas always knew how to act it's just critics can't stand him in any action/horror movies but they don't bother me. Nicolas knows what they say and he doesn't care either but I have noticed that some of his old fans never support his movies anymore it seems like. The haters say things like his movies are flops because they don't do well in theaters anymore. Johnny Depp seems to be having a similar problem now with critics and financially. Johnny's movie Transcendent or whatever was just released and it cost more than $100 million and it bombed horribly it only made like $4 million in two days and critics hated it mostly. I know that joe is being critisized positively it has a 84% which is wonderful for Nicolas but I noticed financially it has only made back $154,494 from it's low budget of only $6 million in 1 week. But believe me I hope it can do alot better in the coming weeks if it even lasts that long in theaters and it doesn't help that it's limited to only 48 theaters and it's spring time. If you ask me they should have waited until the end of the year to release it around the oscar season because that is when independent movies do really well. The thing is Nicolas has had limited movie's be released around the oscar season before and they were low budget and always made there money back very well. Leaving Las Vegas and Adaptation both were low budget and made around $30 million each or more. I have noticed that David Gordon Green is underrated with his independent movies though they have never made more than $1 million and that's a shame. I'm not sure if Joe will even be remembered come oscar season and that's a shame. I really want Nicolas to do well with this financially and be awarded for it but it might not be might to be for him. Maybe he will have better luck with the dying of the light being released this year or 2015? I have seen Joe already on on-demand and I loved it. But some people are saying on imdb.com already that it didn't have a big enough plot and it is a mess. So I told them if they don't like it to go read the book instead. I wish it were longer that is all and I knew more about the characters so I ordered the book to read. I give the movie a 10/10.
I fear that it will be overlooked by the oscars sadly.Because like you say the timing etc great film though. But who knows for definite? Fingers crossed, mixed reviews for Tokarev I see on Twitter, still want to see it though of course.
I would not worry about Joe. I think it will be ok. Yes, Award season can be fickle. But they don't always look at movies that come out late in the season. Joe has gotten great reviews from movie watchers and critics alike and it is loved. Nic has made a brilliant comeback and we cannot worry about it. And even if he is not nominated for any of his upcoming movies we all know he is a star to us and always be a winner.
Amen to that! Although, I still have not have it any where I live in theaters at all. Sorry, to say. I think because it is an Independent film. Anyway, we here are all supporting Nick in any of his films and love his acting no matter what others say out there. I guess I need to wait for the DVD to buy it for my collection this film Which I will. I normal buy his films once it gets on DVD.
