@eva the thing bout vampires kiss (or any art) is there is no right or wrong interpretation! yours is right for you flowerface i like to leave it open and unknown! 

@Lady Arwen,  that is one point of the film where i stopped laughing completely..then when he put the gun in his mouth...it feels uncomfortable to find that funny but on some levels in later viewings maybe it is purely because of Nic's expressionistic style...

In terms of the rape (and I'm glad it isn't shown, which I can imagine might have been considered) Peter's knowledge of the act is very confusing because he explicitly threatens her, but then during the act we see his vampire mistress... from my reading, it's a defense mechanism that kicks in so that Peter doesn't have to think about the monstrous thing he is doing.

interesting point about us becoming complicit Sprocket had not thought of that..now that explains the guilt i slightly feel ofr finding some things that are obvously dark, funny

I couldn`t watch that scene. I had to look away. Allthough there wasn`t real bullets in it, and he didn`t know that, it was really an extreme scene at that point.

It's because we experience confusion and madness along Peter and we tend to become vested with our protagonist, especially if they're charismatic. I totally find myself feeling a little guilty too that some of those scenes with Alva continue to be funny... not as bad as with A Clockwork Orange though!

@Powermad from the dvd commentary i think Robert bierman the director wanted to show a family representative of New York at the time, and it was like a naturalism compared to peter loew's expresionism!

talking of New york the city featured very much in the movie! some beautiful cinematography!

 yes, i actually find myself separating out entirely from the actions of the protagonist in A Clockwork orange, i am outside looking on, i dont feel the same sympathy at all, maybe because i don't feel the same level of humour also..
